Description Item Specs   This is the Handmade Forge Folded 400 Layer Shirasaya Kaiken Tanto. The tanto is universally known as the dagger that Samurai carried with them as a status symbol and for use if a wakizashi short sword was inconvenient. Whereas most tanto would have about a 8-10 inch blade, this is a shortened kaiken tanto. Kaiken tanto were normally carried by samurai class women and were traditionally given to a woman as a wedding gift. This style of tanto was carried in the obi and used for self defense and rarely for jigai (seppuku). This particular model is made by honsanmai lamination with a monosteel core, and folded steel jackets to give a unique appearance which is then through hardened. It comes in a shirasaya mount, made of dark brown wood with a single smoked bamboo mekugi pin. *Since each sword is handmade and sharpened and polished by hand, the dimensions and level of sharpness may vary from piece to piece.
