The axe is one of the oldest weapons in human history. Beginning in the late Neolithic period, the axe began its life as a functional tool. However, as with so many other tools, the axe soon became a weapon. The life of the battle axe closely followed the evolution of early man. The axe went from stone to copper, bronze to iron, and finally steel.

The battle axe became a common weapon in Europe during the Viking Age. The Vikings turned the axe into an extremely effective combat weapon. The weight of the axe was reduced to increase speed and the head given a thin edge finish. These two modifications allowed the battle axe to inflict deep, grievous wounds to enemy soldiers.
